Boys by Charli XCX
Occasionally a song allows you to enjoy trash rather than disdain it. This is one such song, with a catchy melody and pop-hook.
Boys has become an anthem of a certain, perhaps more commercialized, subset of the gay community, used liberally in the 2022 film Fire Island, played at pride parades and pop music parties in LGBTQ clubs across the globe. Whether this was intended or not is a mystery to me; it could have also been composed for lusty teenage girls. Certainly, though, in this era of every product having a target audience, I was not the intended subject. Either way, I think it’s great.
I’ve created a Spotify playlist of all the songs from Calendance so far. You can find it here. I will update it with every new post. Another quick thing—I’ve added the possibility to pay for this newsletter on either a monthly or annual subscription basis, although it will still remain free without a paywall. You can sign up for this plan via the ‘Subscribe Now’ button below. If you enjoy reading these and would like to contribute something to keep the lights on, that’d be incredibly helpful and appreciated. Regardless, I thank you all very much for your continuous support.
